Defining Marketing and Public Relations:

There are several functions of marketing that makes it effective, these are:
  • Distribution
  • Financing
  • Selling
  • Market Information Management (Distinguishing the appropriate audience in the market etc.)
  • Pricing
  • Product and Service Management
  • Promotion
Marketing connects production and consumption together and in addition to economic and social responsibility, marketing is also responsible for some of the environment. For example, a company would have to consider how to effectively reach their target audience in the market whilst also ensuring that their product is suitable for the economy and the environment. Therefore, a company such as The Body Shop, who advertise that they are a company selling 'Beauty Products inspired by Nature and Ethically produced'. The Body Shop do not ethically believe in Animal Testing, they support Community Fair Trade and advertise that they Protect the Planet. They have a very strong advertising campaign and have previously raised £500,000 for a partner Charity called Teenage Cancer Trust, sourced a campaign in which 1,000,000 customers signed the Cruelty Free International pledge to call on governments and regulators to ban animal testing in cosmetic products globally and donated £200,000 from their 2013 Christmas sales towards building five new schools with their Community Fair Trade partners around the world. All through these fundraisers and other pledges, this company is able to use these as a market point to advertise the key values of the company, hence as to why they are such a successful company of their type. The company have shown that they have effectively targeted their audience by promoting suitable products to them.

PR agencies, as opposed to advertising agencies, promote companies or individuals via editorial coverage.  This is known as “earned” or “free” media — stories appearing on websites, newspapers, magazines and TV programmes — as compared to “paid media” or advertisements.
PR agencies and advertising agencies share the same goals:  promoting clients and making them seem as successful, honest, important, exciting or relevant as possible.

The functions of PR help raise awareness about an organisation as well as give it a chance to define, control and distribute its message to internal and external audiences. The function's of PR include:

  • Media Representation - Developing and distributing products, pitching stories to journalists and responding to reporter inquires.
  • Crisis Communication - Protecting a company from a threat to its reputation is a function of public relations. Preparing a crisis communication plan and training leadership and employees on its components is handled by a PR department.
  • Content Development - Preparing documents is another function of public relations. Examples of content developed by a PR department include company news;ethers, blogs, speeches and annual reports.
  • Stakeholder Relations - Stakeholders are people who hold an interest in or could be affected by an organisation objectives or actions.
  • Social Media Management - Establishing, monitoring and growing an organisations or individuals online presence is another function of PR. Specific tasks may include creating or updating Facebook pages, tweeting information and keeping an eye on what others are saying online about an organization.
